How to Reclaim Your Identity When Cancer Tries to Steal It

(lets make this one about re-igniting your flame when you get tired of dealing with hard things)

Cancer changes everything — your calendar, your energy, even the way you see yourself in the mirror. And while there’s no sugarcoating the hard days, there are ways to meet them with courage, grit, and even a little laughter. Think of this list as a Warrior’s toolkit — five simple things you can reach for when the fight feels heavy.

1. Ask the Questions That Put You Back in Control

You don’t just deserve answers — you deserve clarity and confidence. Doctors are experts in medicine, but you are the expert in your own life. Before each appointment, jot down questions like:

  • “How will this treatment affect my day-to-day life?”

  • “Are there options that fit my lifestyle better?”

  • “What can I do outside of treatment to feel stronger?”

Bring a friend or family member if you can — two sets of ears are always better than one. Asking questions isn’t being “difficult.” It’s being a Warrior who knows her voice matters.

2. Prescribe Yourself Laughter Daily

Some days you need something stronger than meds — like a good belly laugh. Science backs it up: laughter lowers stress hormones, boosts immunity, and eases pain.

  • Queue up your favorite stand-up special.

  • Save a TikTok folder labeled “Laugh Emergency.”

  • Keep that one friend on speed dial who always leaves you in stitches.

Yes, cancer is serious. But you don’t have to be serious all the time. Give yourself permission to laugh loud and long.

3. Build Your Warrior Playlist

Music has a way of reaching the parts of us that words can’t. Create a playlist that makes you feel like you. Add the songs that remind you of who you were before cancer — and who you still are. Then sprinkle in some power anthems to fuel your fight.

Think: Lizzo when you need sass, Beyoncé when you need strength, and maybe a little Bon Jovi for those “Living on a Prayer” moments. Hit play when you’re tired, anxious, or waiting for an appointment — and let the music carry you.

4. Curate Comfort Like It’s Sacred

Comfort isn’t frivolous. It’s survival. Surround yourself with small things that whisper: you’re safe, you’re cared for, you’re still you.

  • Wrap up in your softest blanket.

  • Slip into slippers that sparkle (like our signature Red Slippers).

  • Light a candle that smells like home.

Create a cozy nook — your Warrior’s retreat. When the world feels like too much, that little corner can feel like everything.

5. Celebrate Small, Fierce Victories

Warriors know that every win counts. Did you make it to treatment on time? That’s a victory. Got out of bed and brushed your hair on a rough morning? Victory. Laughed instead of cried? Victory.

Keep a “Victory Journal” — one line a day. Over time, you’ll look back and see proof that you’ve been stronger than you thought, day after day.

The Warrior’s Reminder

No one chooses this fight, but every day you get to choose how you show up for yourself. Ask boldly. Laugh loudly. Dance unapologetically. Rest without guilt. And celebrate every single win.

Because cancer can take many things, but it will never take your Warrior spirit.
